PVL fans made their frustration evident with the officiating during the fifth set of the thrilling match, as the Petro Gazz Angels secured a hard-fought 20-25, 25-22, 25-12, 33-35, 15-9 victory over the F2 Logistics Cargo Movers on Thursday afternoon.
The referees’ awarding of a delayed point to the Angels at 7-6 in the fifth set became the main point of contention, as they cited an error by the Cargo Movers when they held a previous lead of 5-2.
Despite there being no change of ball possession, the Cargo Movers made the decision to have Mary Joy Baron serve instead of Ivy Lacsina while leading 5-2.
Curiously, the referees awarded only the score for the Angels when the score was tied at 6-6 midway in the deciding set.
Another officiating error that drew boos from the crowd occurred when the referees made a net touch call on the Angels’ Gretchel Soltones during the crucial moments of the fifth set, with the Angels leading 13-9 against the Cargo Movers.
Angels head coach Oliver Almadro contested the pivotal call, and following several minutes of review, the PVL Technical Committee determined that the point should be replayed.
