The Premier Volleyball League (PVL) is planning to put some rules in place to curb the entry of undergraduate volleyball players into the professional league.
According to PVL president Ricky Palou, the recent entry of several undergraduate players is somewhat alarming.
“We’d like to take some steps to sort of curb the entry of college players coming to the PVL,” Palou said in an interview with Playitright TV.
“We’re not gonna restrict them, but we’ll put some rules and some guidelines that will make them think twice about joining the pro league,” he added.
Among the notable undergrad players who entered PVL are Trisha Tubu, Kate Santiago, Pia Ildefonso, and Joan Narit of the Farm Fresh Foxies, as well as Alyssa Bertolano of the Quezon City Gerflor Defenders.
Palou said, personally, he wants to see the country’s young volleyball players attain college degrees first before turning professional.
“Personally, I feel it’s important for our athletes to get their college degree,” Palou said. “They’re not gonna be playing volleyball all their life.”
“They’ve got to be able to do something else when they stop playing, and I feel that getting a college degree is important,” he added.
