Quinto, Knights massacre Generals; Blazers cut down Altas

297

Letran drew strength from another all-around effort of Bong Quinto as it trampled Emilio Aguinaldo College, 76-56, to improve to joint third with College of St. Benilde in the 94th NCAA basketball tournament at the Filoil Flying V Centre in San Juan City.

Quinto dropped 11 points, 10 rebounds and 11 assists to lift the Knights to their sixth victory against three defeats, good for a share of No. 3 with the Blazers, who turned back the Perpetual Help Altas, 84-77, on 6-3 (win-loss) mark.

It was the second triple-double in a row by Quinto, who had 12 points, 10 rebounds and 11 assists in an 84-64 demolition of Mapua last Tuesday.

Interestingly, Quinto has been averaging 11.6 points, 10 rebounds and 10 assists in his last three outings and it looks like he’s not about the slow down.

“I hope he keeps it up,” said Letran coach Jeff Napa of Quinto.

The Generals faltered to 2-7.

In the other game, CSB was quick to pounce on the third quarter injury of Perpetual Help guard Edgar Charcos by going to the troika of Fil-Ams Justin Gutang and Yankie Haruna, who fired 20 points apiece, and rookie transferee James Pasturan, who dished out his best scoring effort with 13 points including 11 in the final canto.

The Altas were in control midway in the third period but lost it when Charcos hyperextended his right knee.

Perpetual Help fell to its third defeat against five wins but will have an opportunity to reclaim a spot at third if it hurdles the Arellano Chiefs on Tuesday.
