Rain or Shine boosts Top 2 finish by trouncing Meralco
Rain or Shine bolstered its chances of finishing within the Top 2 of the eliminations by finishing off Meralco, 88-85, in the PBA Philippine Cup at the Cuneta Astrodome on Friday.
Late game charities from Gabe Norwood and Beau Belga enabled the Elasto Painters to avoid a meltdown as Meralco managed to climbed back and tied the game at 85 despite trailing Rain or Shine in the first half.
Norwood hit the first of those freebies to snap the game’s last tie at 85, before Belga went 2-for-4 in the next two Rain or Shine possessions.
Baser Amer missed the potential game-winning triple for the Bolts with 5 ticks left to play.
James Yap paced the Painters with a team-high 14 points, Ed Daquioag chipped in points and 5 rebounds.
Now with a record of 8-3, the Painters currently own the best record in the league.
A top 2 finish after the eliminations will guarantee them a twice-to-beat advantage in the quarterfinal round.
Nico Salva fired 18 points and Reynel Hugnatan delivered 16 points in the loss as Meralco’s record fell to 3-6 and is in grave danger of missing the next round.
