Rain or Shine ends slump with win over Phoenix

The Rain or Shine Elasto Painters routed Phoenix Fuel Masters, 120-99 to end their two-game slide in the 2018 PBA Philippine Cup at the Araneta Coliseum Wednesday.

The Elasto Painters leaned on a strong first quarter to set the pace of the game. Second-year player Ed Daquioag stepped up to start an early 14-nothing run in the first canto, 18-5.

Phoenix stopped the momentum by calling a timeout but it didn’t take long until Rain or Shine built a massive 28-point lead, 39-11.

“I think the players just wanted to win today,” Rain or Shine head coach Caloy Garcia said. “I told them after the loss against Global Port that that’s not the team I know.”

Daquioag’s hot streak, however, was momentarily cut short after he badly collided with Jason Perkins, forcing the coaching staff to subbed him.

Chris Tiu held the team together, hitting back-to-back triples in the third quarter to extend their lead to 39, 86-47.

Daquioag scored 21 points with five rebounds and five assists while James Yap showed his vintage form, chipping in 20. Perkins and Matthew Wright finished with 17 points-apiece.

Rain or Shine’s next opponent with be Kia while Phoenix’s next match will be against Magnolia.
