Rain or Shine upsets San Miguel Beer on Nambatac’s winner
Rey Nambatac scored on a game-winner as Rain or Shine Elasto Painters stuns San Miguel Beermen, 95-93, in the 2021 PBA Philippine Cup on Sunday at the Don Honorio Ventura State University Gym in Bacolor, Pampanga.
After losing its 93-89 lead on back-to-back hits by Beermen’s June Mar Fajardo and Jaymar Perez, Nambatac rose to the occasion with a conversion with two seconds left to give the Painters the upperhand for good.
Nambatac finished the match with nine points, including two three-point conversions, to go with three assists as the Painters notched its second straight victory to improve to 6-4 win-loss slate.
Rookie Leonard Santillan top-scored with career-high 21 points, Javee Mocon added double-double 18 points and 12 rebounds as newcomer Anton Asistio also hit double-digits with 11 points for Rain or Shine.
Down 55-45 midway in the third quarter, the Painters slowly clawed its way back on connections by Mocon and Andrei Caracut and consecutive baskets from Santillan to take a 72-69 lead.
The Beermen regained the lead at 76-75 in the fourth quarter but back-to-back triples by Santillan and outside hits also from Mocon and Caracut gave the Painters an 87-83 advantage.
San Miguel Beer answered with four straight points to tie the score for the last time at 87-all but Rain or Shine got back the lead at 93-89 with a two-pointer from Mocon and free throws by Asistio and Santillan.
Terrence Romeo tallied 20 points, including three outside baskets, while Perez and Arwind Santos ended up with 18 markers apiece as the Beermen saw its two-game winning run snapped to drop to 5-3.
