Red hot Calisaan, Stags conquer Knights

One shot was all the San Sebastian Golden Stags needed to oust the Letran Knights in their knockout game on Tuesday at Mall of Asia Arena.

Calisaan found himself open from the deep and buried a go-ahead trey with 18.3 seconds remaining on the final period after team captain Ryan Costelo attracted Letran’s defense.

Calisaan unleashed a career-best 36 points, and he was also the Stags’ workhorse that brought them to victory, 74-69.

“Talagang gusto kong manalo,” said the stretch forward. “Apat na taon na akong nasa college ngayon lang ako nakapasok sa Final 4.”

The Stags’ recent victory marks their first Final 4 appearance since 2013, and coincidentally, it was a redemption victory against the Knights who barred them from their trip to Finals.

Five years ago, the Pinatubo trio of Calvin Abueva, Ian Sanggalang, and Ronald Pascual fell under the hands of the Letran Knights led by Kevin Alas, as they failed to use their twice-to-beat-advantage to advance the Finals.

The Knights also spoiled CJ Perez’ Final 4 debut with the Stags a year after.

The Recto-based squad finally enters the playoffs by beating their old tormentor, and they have a valid reason to celebrate their hard-fought W.

“Ang saya palang makapasok sa Final 4, paano pa kaya kapag champion,” Calisaan ended.
