San Beda drew strength from the bench as it routed Jose Rizal, 77-40, to remain within striking distance of unbeaten Lyceum of the Philippines University at the end of the first round of the 94th NCAA basketball tournament at the Filoil Flying V Centre in San Juan City.

The defending champion dug deep from it bench players with Calvin Oftana erupting for a career-high 16 points and AC Soberano adding 11, nine coming from beyond the arc.

“I just want to give opportunity to my other players,” said San Beda mentor Boyet Fernandez.

They didn’t need Robert Bolick to produce the same way he did when he unleashed a historic 50-point performance in a 98-79 smashing of Arellano University last Friday.

Bolick saw action in just 17 minutes and attempted just four shots for four points.

The Red Lions notched their eight win in nine games.

The Bombers absorbed their seventh defeat against two wins.
