Reichelt delivers as Philippine Azkals scrape past Singapore

Patrick Reichelt found the back of the net in the 77th minute to lift the Philippine Azkals to a 1-0 win against a stubborn Singapore side in the 2018 Suzuki Cup at the Pana-ad Park and Stadium in Bacolod City.

The Azkals dominated the possession of the ball but created few chances to break the tough Singaporean defense.

The team, however, found its best chance when James Younghusband won the ball that eventually found its way to the Ceres Negros FC winger.

Reichelt wove through three Singaporean defenders before beating goal keeper Hassan Sunny for the winning goal.

“We changed our game plan and James Younghusband at the center does a lot with his presence. And then we changed and made things a little bit quicker and it worked out,” Reichelt said after the game.

The win gave the Philippines the full three points and a good start on its bid to win the tournament for the first time.

It was also a rousing start for the Azkals’ new coach Sven Goran Eriksson.

Eriksson said he was very happy for the whole country with the victory.

“We created several chances for the whole 90 minutes but the ball didn’t go in. Of course that was a relief,” the Swedish football legend added.

The Azkals will travel next to Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia on November 17 to face Timor Leste in another Group B match up.
