Reyes resigns again as Gilas coach: MVP was only reason I got job
Chot Reyes once again resigned as head coach of Gilas Pilipinas. In his statement, Reyes revealed that it was Samahang Basketball ng Pilipinas Chairman Emeritus Manny V. Pangilinan that asked him to coach the national team again in 2016.
“I came out of retirement to coach Gilas because MVP asked me back in October 2016,” Reyes said in a statement. “[But] it is time for me to step aside and contribute in a different capacity, focusing on the 2023 program.”
Reyes was removed in October 2014, after Pangilinan disbanded the team. Reyes was controversial back then, after asking his players to shoot in Kazakhstan’s basket in a chance to bring the game into overtime in the Asian Games.
Tab Baldwin momentarily coached Gilas Pilipinas after but Reyes had a controversial return in 2016. Before that announcement, MVP appointed Reyes as President of TV5.
Calls for Reyes’ resignation was once again voiced after the controversial free-for-all matchup against Australia in July.
In Reyes-era of basketball, teams in the PBA were not supportive in the program, with others limiting their national team participation with one player only.
