RJ Abarrientos requests KBL release, to transfer to another league

RJ Abarrientos has parted ways with Korean Basketball League team Ulsan Hyundai Mobis Phoebus as he reportedly desires to play in another league.

In a report by Star News Korea, the former Far Eastern University Tamaraws guard and the Mobis Phoebus had a mutual agreement to end their supposed three-year partnership.

“We have decided to terminate the contract and retire from the team through mutual agreement,” an unnamed team official was quoted as saying in the news report.

“As Abarrientos requested a transfer to another league, we decided to retire (him) after mutual contract termination through an internal decision,” he added.

It was not mentioned in the report, however, where Abarrientos plans to play next.

Abarrientos’ departure from the Mobis Phoebus came as a surprise, as he had a solid rookie year with the team that led him to be named the 2022–23 KBL Rookie of the Year.

In 51 games played, he averaged 13.6 points, 4.8 assists, and 2.9 rebounds per game, but the Mobis Phoebus failed to move past the quarterfinals. (AC)
