Roach lashes at Horn’s trainer
Famed trainer Freddie Roach lambasted the handler of Australian boxer Jeff Horn for comparing his ward to Manny Pacquiao’s Mexican conqueror Juan Manuel Marquez.
Recently, trainer Glenn Rushton claimed that his unbeaten fighter can be a better version of Marquez, the proud Mexican warriors who scored a stunning 6th round knockout win over Pacquiao last December 2012 in Las Vegas.
“I believe Jeff Horn has those abilities but he’s slightly bigger than Marquez and a little bit faster and just a little bit more technically proficient,” said Rushton “I believe Jeff can do what Marquez has done and actually do it a little bit better. The skill that Marquez used against Manny has been successful.”
An amused Roach said he could not believe Horn’s camp could make such claim.
That is a very very bold statement and I say that person knows nothing about boxing. That is definitely not true. I’ve seen tapes of this guy, give me a break,” said Roach.
Still, Rushton went on to defend his earlier statement by insisting on Horn’s experience.
“You’re talking of a man who made it into the quarterfinals of the Olympics so technically he is a very good boxer. When you back that up with a heart of a lion and a chin that’s like granite it’s going to be a great contest that’s all I can say,” said Rushton.
Horn was Australia’s bet during the 2012 Olympics in London where he reached the quarterfinals of the quadrennial event.
The 29-year-old Horn (16-0-1, 11 knockouts) will try to snatch the WBO welterweight crown against Pacquiao when they meet for 12 rounds this Sunday at the Suncorp Stadium in Brisbane, Australia.
