Rondina powers Blaze Spikers over Tornadoes

Sisi Rondina delivered big as she came through with clutch hits to power Petron to a 28-26, 25-27, 25-21, 24-26, 15-12 win over Foton in the bronze-medal match of the Philippine Superliga All-Filipino Conference at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.

Rondina, the reigning UAAP Most Valuable Player, scored five of Petron’s last six points for the Blaze Spikers, who were relegated to the consolation round of this prestigious women’s club league bankrolled by Team Rebel Sports, SOGO, Eurotel, PCSO, Cocolife, UCPB Gen, Mueller, Senoh, Asics, Bizooku and One Sport following a pair of semifinal setbacks to Cignal.

Although it wasn’t the finish they were hoping, Blaze Spikers coach Shaq Delos Santos was happy with the bronze, their lowest performance in the past three years.

“This bronze medal is still gold for us,” Delos Santos said.
“We’re very happy, we’re thankful for this, it wasn’t the ending that we would have wanted but third place is till good.”

Down, 5-9, in the fifth set, the Blaze Spikers inched to within two, 9-11, as Rondina put Petron at match point, 14-11.

Dindin Santiago-Manabat saved a match point, 12-14, before Rondina sealed the win for Petron.

Rondina finished with a game-high 33 points, built on 30 attacks, in the match that took almost three hours to finish.

“I was cramping already but I just told myself that I can still do it,” said Rondina.

“I looked at them, my coaches and my teammates, and it gave me enough motivation to give my best and finish the match.”

“Actually yesterday, I told coach Shaq that this match is a championship match, we have no more tomorrow so we have to give our best.”

Team captain Ces Molina had 15 points for Petron, while Mika Reyes and Remy Palma each added 11 markers.

Dindin Santiago-Manabat led the way for the Tornadoes, with 26 points, while Jaja Santiago chipped in 22, Mina Aganon had 11, Eya Laure scored 11 and Shaya Adorador contributed 10 markers.

Meanwhile, the season-ending Invitational Conference kicks off on October with Sweet & Fit Stevia and Glorious Blend as sponsors.
