Super sablay! Sablan out as Growling Tigers’ coach?
For leading the University of Santo Tomas to one of, if not, its darkest moments in history, Boy Sablan is reportedly out as coach of the Growling Tigers.
Sources say Sablan has tendered his resignation yesterday.
His coaching staff—that includes Gerry Esplana, Bobby Jose, Tylon Darjuan, Juben Ledesma and Gina Francisco—will leave the Growling Tigers by the end of this month.
They will, however, continue to receive their monthly pay until May next year as stated in their contracts. The Growling Tigers salvaged some pride after winning their last game against the University of the East Red Warriors, 88-85 but it wasn’t enough for Sablan to save his job.
Under Sablan, the Growling Tigers went 3-11 and 1-13 in the last two UAAP seasons. Among the possible choices to replace Sablan is former coach and star player Pido Jarencio, Alfrancis Chua and Aldin Ayo.
Jarencio helmed the Growling Tigers from 2006-2013. Jarencio led UST to the championship in his rookie year as a coach. He is the current coach of Global Port Batang Pier in the PBA. Chua is champion coach in the PBA and the Philippine Basketball League. He also played for Santo Tomas when the team was known as the Glowing Goldies. Ayo is currently the coach of defending UAAP champion De La Salle Green Archers.
