JUNE Mar Fajardo may have played his final game for Gilas Pilipinas, but the veteran center made sure to leave one more contribution as the Philippines closed its FIBA Basketball World Cup 2027 Asian Qualifiers fourth window campaign with a 68-56 victory over Iran on Sunday.
Fajardo finished with six points and two rebounds in what could be his last appearance for the national team, with much of his impact coming during a crucial second-quarter stretch.
The veteran big man provided the Philippines with a steady presence inside as Gilas established control of the game and built the foundation for its eventual 12-point victory.
Asked about his contribution during the second quarter, Fajardo kept his answer simple.
“Kung ano iyung pwede kong maitulong, ibigay ko,” Fajardo said.
The game carried added significance for Fajardo, who has indicated that he is nearing the end of his Gilas career. After years of representing the country, the San Miguel Beer star acknowledged that the moment was an emotional one.
“Last game na,” Fajardo said when asked if it was indeed his final game for Gilas.
Fajardo also expressed his gratitude for the opportunity to share the court with the younger generation of national team players like Kai Sotto, AJ Edu, Dwight Ramos and Juan Gomez de Liaño.
The Cebuano center also thanked the fans who packed the venue and showed their appreciation for him throughout the game.
“Maraming salamat sa mga fans,” Fajardo said. “Maraming salamat sa mga fans na nagpunta talaga dito para suportahan kami.”
While his scoring numbers were modest, his second-quarter contribution helped Gilas gain momentum after falling behind by double digits in the opening quarter.
Fajardo leaves the national team setup having played a major role in Gilas’ campaigns over the years, including its successful run to the 2023 Asian Games gold medal.
With the Philippines now looking toward the next generation, Fajardo’s final appearance—if indeed it proves to be his last—ended with another victory for the country he has represented for more than a decade. (Adrian Co)
