Adamson Lady Falcons celebrating their straight-set victory over the Perpetual Lady Altas in the V-League Collegiate Challenge.

ADAMSON University Lady Falcons began its campaign to retain the V-League Collegiate Challenge title on a winning note, dispatching the University of Perpetual Help Lady Altas, 25-21, 25-18, 25-22, Sunday at Gameville Central Park in Mandaluyong City.

The Lady Falcons overcame the absence of reigning UAAP MVP Shaina Nitura by leaning on Nigerian wing spiker Frances Mordi, who came through in crucial stretches of the match.

Mordi led all scorers with 20 points, including 16 attacks, two aces and a block. Her serving helped Adamson gain separation early in the second set, while a block from the Nigerian sealed the victory in the deciding moments of the third.

“First of all, I thank God that we got this win. Also I’m happy na nakuha namin yung first game. I’m happy sa performance nila, na kahit sino hugutin, they performed well,” Adamson coach JP Yude said.

“For us, in this tournament, we always gain experience and learnings na babaunin namin sa UAAP,” he added.

Lana Barrera contributed 12 points while taking over for Nitura for two sets, while newcomer Lhouriz Tuddao made an impressive debut at opposite hitter with nine points.

The Lady Altas was led by Cyrille Almeñiana, who scored eight points after making an early impact before Adamson’s defense limited her production. (Adrian Co)
