Sotto’s inclusion in Asiad-bound Gilas depends on late-replacement request

KAI Sotto’s chances of joining Gilas Pilipinas for the Asian Games have become increasingly difficult after the Philippines submitted its shortlist for the continental tournament.

Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas executive director Erika Dy said there is currently no straightforward way to add Sotto to the lineup after the roster submission.

“Right now, walang chance kasi nag-submit na tayo ng shortlist din natin,” Dy said.

The Philippines can still make changes, but only under specific circumstances allowed by the Asian Games organizers.

Dy explained that the roster can only be altered through a late replacement, subject to approval from the Olympic Council of Asia.

“So puwede lang tayo magpalit ng line-up at this point kung meron tayong LAR or late replacement na maa-approve ng OCA,” she said.

That process would also require supporting medical documentation before any change could be approved.

“Kailangan mo mag-show ng mga medical certificate, etcetera, etcetera, for us to be able to do that,” Dy added.

The development comes after Sotto made his return to Gilas in the fourth FIBA Basketball World Cup 2027 Asian Qualifiers window, helping the Philippines secure wins over Jordan and Iran.

But despite his strong return, his availability for the upcoming Asian Games remains complicated because of the roster submission process.

For now, Sotto’s path to the Asian Games remains dependent on whether a valid late-replacement situation arises and receives OCA approval. (Jesus Nathaniel Valdez)
