Olga Carmona made the difference, propelling Spain to the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup championship with a 1-0 victory over England in the finals on Sunday night at Stadium Australia.
At the 30th minute, the Spanish team captain shattered the deadlock with a precise, low, left-footed shot that found the far corner and eluded the grasp of England goalkeeper Mary Earps.
This marked Carmona’s second pivotal goal in the tournament, as she had also secured the game-winner for Spain in their 2-1 triumph over third-ranked Sweden during the semifinal round.
Despite the significant pre-tournament drama, Spain emerged as the aggressors in the championship game, dominating possession during the first half.
At the 68th minute, the Spaniards had a chance to extend their lead following a handball call against an England player. However, Jenni Hermoso’s penalty kick went directly into the hands of Earps.
During the latter stages of the second half, Spain experienced several tense moments, as England had numerous chances to equalize the score. However, goalkeeper Cata Coll rose to the occasion, securing their inaugural championship.
