Erik Spoelstra has coached NBA superstars before. Now the Filipino-American coach gets to build around Giannis Antetokounmpo.
The Miami Heat acquired the two-time MVP from Milwaukee in the biggest move of their offseason overhaul, giving Spoelstra one of the NBA’s most dominant two-way players.
And the Heat coach isn’t asking Giannis to take a smaller role. “We brought him here for a reason. He’s here for a reason,” Spoelstra said at Miami’s media day.
“We want him to establish himself in that conversation of being the best player in the league.”
Antetokounmpo arrives in Miami after 13 seasons with Milwaukee, where he became a two-time MVP and led the Bucks to the 2021 NBA championship.
He ranks fifth in the NBA in both scoring and rebounding since entering the league in 2013, with 21,531 points and 8,882 rebounds.
At 31, Giannis believes he remains capable of dominating on both ends of the court. “If not the best, I’m one of the best players in the world,” he said.
Spoelstra now faces the challenge of fitting his new superstar into a revamped Heat lineup featuring Bam Adebayo, Klay Thompson, Andrew Wiggins, Bobby Portis and other veterans.
Giannis acknowledged that the transition will take time as he learns a new offense, defense and group of teammates.
Spoelstra, however, made Miami’s intentions clear.
“We’re not bringing him here to take a step back,” he said. “We’ll try to maximize his strengths as much as we can and get him as comfortable as possible.”
For Spoelstra and the Heat, the assignment is straightforward: turn their newest superstar into the centerpiece of another championship run. (Reuters)
