Sumagaysay blocking helps Golden Spikers sweep Tamaraws


The University of Santo Tomas Golden Spikers defeated Far Eastern University, 25-19, 25-13, 25-20, in the 2018 PVL Collegiate Conference at the FilOil Flying V Arena in San Juan City.

UST started hot in the second set, leading as much as 11-points, 12-1, behind Jayvee Sumagaysay’s blocking. The Golden Spikers didn’t look back as they notched the set, 25-13.

“Bagito yung mga attackers sa kabila kaya nakakablock yung middle eh,” UST head coach Odjie Mamon said.

UST used a 9-3 rally in the third set, 19-11. FEU threatens the Golden Spikers after it close the lead within four, 20-24, but Joshua Umandal powers through the block to seal the game.

UST had 37 attack points while FEU was limited to only 24.

Sumagaysay led UST with 13 points in eight attacks and five blocks. Captain Manuel Medina and Genesis Redudo had 11 and 10 points, respectively.

Mark Calado was limited to nine points.

The Golden Spikers will next face the De La Salle University Green Spikers on Saturday, July 28, while the Tamaraws will try to get their first win against the Arellano Chiefs on Wednesday, July 25. Both games will be at the FilOil Flying V Arena.
