Supalpal! SMB reject outright TNT bid to get Standhardinger for P20M
TNT KaTropa has not given up on its dream to get Filipino-German power forward Christian Standhardinger.
After failing to entice Kia Picanto with its P50 million offer to buy its 2017 No. 1 draft pick, a PBA insider said a high-ranking TNT official approached his counterpart with San Miguel Beermen to part with Standhardinger.
SMB won the Standhardinger sweepstakes when Kia agreed to swap its draft rights in exchange for the Beermen’s Ronald Tubid, Rashwan Mccarthy, Jay-R Reyes and a first-round pick in the 2019 draft.
The TNT official offered to swap players with the Beermen and sweetened it with a P20 million cash incentive, said the PBA insider.
But the SMB official, the PBA insider said, flatly rejected TNT’s offer as he did not even bother to ask about the players TNT was willing to let go for Standhardinger.
The PBA insider said the same TNT official, along with another executive from its sister team NLEX, approached Kia with an audacious P50 million offer just to get Picanto’s pick.
TNT has gone to extremes to snag Standhardinger in the draft, including having one of its team managers to file the Filipino-German’s application to the PBA draft as bared by PBA Commissioner Chito Narvasa.
TNT lashed out at Narvasa’s candidness by leading seven other teams to oust Narvasa as commissioner. TNT probably hoping a new commissioner would rescind the deal between Kia and SMB (Standhardinger won’t be playing in the PBA until his contract with another league expired in June 2018).
TNT, however, can only kick out Narvasa if it gets 8 of the 12 teams or two-thirds vote of the board.
