Tab Baldwin, Ateneo to appeal DOLE ruling over employment documents

Former Ateneo coach Tab Baldwin facing DOLE ruling and employment document issues in the Philippines.

FORMER Blue Eagles head coach Tab Baldwin and the Ateneo de Manila University are considering an appeal of the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) ruling over his employment documents.

Sources familiar with the matter told Abante Bilyonaryo Group’s Homer Sayson that the camp of the American-New Zealander mentor are mulling the possible legal remedies they can do.

The sources also clarified that reports saying Baldwin and Ateneo were each separately fined P4.9 million were inaccurate.

Based on the source’s account of the DOLE decision, Baldwin was ordered to pay a P10,000 fine for not having an Alien Employment Permit (AEP).

A separate penalty was imposed for the absence of a certificate of exemption. The fine was set at P10,000 for every day worked without the certificate, covering 490 days for a total of P4.9 million.

However, the P4.9-million penalty is a solidary fine against Baldwin and Ateneo, meaning the amount is not a separate P4.9-million penalty for each party. Baldwin and Ateneo will determine between themselves how the financial obligation will be settled.

Baldwin previously served as head coach of the Ateneo Blue Eagles before leaving the post.

The DOLE case concerns Baldwin’s employment documents and is separate from the investigations into the June 8 deaths of Ateneo student-athletes Rene Clert “Bobet” Baterbonia and Divine Adili during an off-campus team-building activity in Dipaculao, Aurora.

The deaths have prompted multiple investigations into the circumstances surrounding the incident, while Ateneo has also faced criticism from Baterbonia’s family over its handling of the aftermath. (By the Staff)
