Newcomer Tacloban Fighting Warays defeated Petrogazz Angels in straight sets 25-20, 25-23, 25-21 in an exhibition game of the Philippine Volleyball League held at Bren Z. Guiao Convention Center in San Fernando, Pampanga.

Playing in their first-ever game as a team, the Fighting Warays lived up to their monicker by digging out from an 11-3 hole in the second set.

Jovy Prado, NCAA regular season MVP Shola Alvarez, Finals MVP Regine Arocha and Vira Guillema took charge for the offense as Tacloban chipped away the Gazz Angels’ big lead.

The Fighting Warays eventually took the second set, 25-23.

In the third set, Petro Gazz leaned on veterans Wensh Tiu, Kai Nepomuceno and Chie Saet to grab the lead, 10-8.

But when it appeared the Gazz Angels would extend the game to another set, the Fighting Warays dug even deeper.

Anne Esguerra, Eunice Galang, Bang Pantaleon and Andrea Marzan delivered the killer blows in the third frame to end Petro Gazz’s late comeback.

Tacloban coach Ernesto Pamilar said the win is a good start for the team.

“The girls displayed determination and teamwork despite the fact that we are still missing four key players in the squad. We are still learning and hopefully this victory will set the tone for our campaign in the PVL,” Pamilar added.

Marzan was adjudged player of the game.
