Tama! Guiao says Gilas preps for World Cup must take years

With the Philippines’ campaign technically over, Gilas Pilipinas head coach Yeng Guiao has already reflected on the lessons the national team learned at the 2019 Fiba World Cup.

The veteran tactician said the Philippines should make future national teams better prepared to take on the world’s best teams.

“This team did its best but we had our limitations. We learned our lessons and we’ll try to be a better team next time,” Guiao said in the face of criticism over a 0-4 campaign that included lopsided losses to Serbia and Italy.

“The lessons we learned from this World Cup should be able to be passed onto the other teams,” he added.

Guiao pushed for a long-term program that will primarily include “immersions” to other powerhouse national teams.

The Philippines is preparing to host the next Fiba World Cup in 2023.

“We need a longer preparation time. We need to get out of Asia and get experience versus teams from the other zones like in Europe or Latin America,” said Guiao.
