Filipino boxing champion Marlon Tapales has extended his challenge against Naoya Inoue following the Japanese’s eight-round stoppage of Stephen Fulton for the WBC and WBO super bantamweight titles.
Tapales, who watched the bout from ringside in Japan, personally congratulated the Japanese superstar after Inoue’s victory.
He then formalized his challenge to take on the heavy-hitting Japanese superstar.
“I want to fight Naoya Inoue. I want to prove to myself that I’m a champion,” Tapales, the WBA and IBF super bantamweight king, said in Boxingscene.
Inoue, now a four-division boxing champion, is keen to fight Tapales as it opens another opportunity for the undisputed title in the super bantamweight division.
“Let’s do this this year,” was Inoue’s reply.
Tapales won the WBA and IBF crowns by dethroning erstwhile unbeaten Murodjon Akhmadaliev via a twelve-round split decision win in San Antonio, Texas.
