Team PH’s braces for action in 5th AIMAG

The organizing committee (OC) of the 5th Asian Indoor and Martial Games (AIMAG) has verified and approved the 160-strong Philippine delegation during the delegation registration meeting held last Friday in Ashgabat, Turkmenistan.

A total of 116 athletes will be joined by coaches, medical and secretariat support teams and officials all aiming to improved on one gold and two bronzes haul of Team Philippines four years ago.

Deputy Chef de Mission Raymund Lee Reyes of Karatedo represented Team Philippines in the said activity where confirmation of sports entries, as well as accommodation allocation and other entitlements of the team were verified and finalized. Reyes commended the AIMAG OC for a very well planned event, “the preparations, hospitalities and facilities are excellent.”

Team Philippines will stay at the sprawling 157-hectare Olympic Village where sports venues, the Athletes Village, Sport Hotel and Polyclinics are all located.

Inspection and inventories of apartments and other provisions were conducted Saturday by the Philippine secretariat, assisted by the Village Management Team. “Their provisions are very generous. Our only challenge in operations is internet access as social media is blocked and monitored by the government for security reasons,” explained Reyes. This concern along with matters on competition schedules and technical meetings were taken up during the Chef de Mission meeting last Sunday.

A happy development is the inclusion of e-sports as a demo event. “I wish this was a regular event as this team has shown strong medal potentials in past competitions,” said Reyes.

Team welcome ceremony is scheduled on September 15. As is customary to the Games, each participating country and region’s flag will be hoisted in the Flag Plaza of the Athletes’ Village in a small ceremony. This is the official indication of the delegations participation and presence in the event.

Opening Ceremony is scheduled on September 17.

Philippine Airlines, in partnership with the Philippine Olympic Committee and the Philippine Sports Commission, shall fly our team in a chartered aircraft on a non-stop flight to Ashgabat on September 14.
