Team Rebisco outlasts Sri Lanka’s CEB Sports Club to avoid last-place finish

Team Rebisco needed five sets to dispatch Sri Lanka’s CEB Sports Club, 25-14, 22-25, 25-18, 21-25, 15-11, in the 2021 AVC Asian Men’s Club Volleyball Championship Wednesday at Terminal 21 in Nakhon Ratchasima, Thailand.

With that win, the PH-based team secured a ninth-place finish in the 10-team field.

Rebisco squandered a 2-1 edge in the game, but Joshua Umandal carried the Filipinos with him with timely hits in the clutch and even sealing the final kill to cap off their Thailand stint.

The 22-year old Umandal scored 28 points built on 20 kills, five blocks, and three aces as he emerged as Rebisco’s go-to guy in the tournament.

Team captain John Vic De Guzman and Nico Almendras provided a huge spark off the bench with 11 points each, while Francis Saura and Kim Malabunga added 10 markers apiece.

Sanka Kalu Badana Ge led the Sri Lankans with 18 points
