Tennis star Alex Eala keen to play for national squad in 2026 Asiad

ALEXANDRA Eala has made her desire to represent the Philippines at the 2026 Asian Games clear, even as the Philippine Tennis Association (PHILTA) negotiates with the Women’s Tennis Association (WTA) over her decision to skip the China Open.

Eala, currently ranked No. 18 in the world, is expected to miss the WTA 1000 tournament in Beijing, which overlaps with the Asian Games in Japan later this month.

For Eala, the chance to compete for the country in the continental quadrennial event is something she does not want to pass up.

“I love playing and competing with the Philippine team. In the SEA Games, the Asian Games, I’ve also done [that],” Eala said.

The Filipina tennis star said she particularly enjoys the experience of competing alongside fellow Filipino athletes and values the memories she has created while representing the country.

“I think it’s a really fun environment, and I love being with the team, especially this last SEA Games in December. I had such a great time. I think they’re really memories that stick with me,” she said.

The Asian Games, which are held only once every four years, also played a major role in Eala’s decision.

“And the Asian Games happen once every four years. I just found myself drawn to competing in that, aside from other stuff,” she added.

PHILTA is now seeking an exemption from the WTA to prevent Eala from being sanctioned for missing the mandatory China Open.

Eala’s choice comes after a breakthrough US Open campaign, where she reached the third round for the first time before losing to American Iva Jovic, 7-5, 3-6, 7-5.

Before heading to Japan for the Asian Games, Eala is scheduled to compete at the Singapore Tennis Open as she begins her Asian swing. (Adrian Co)
