Tigresses wins 5th beach volley crown
UNIVERSITY of Santo Tomas demolished Far Eastern University Saturday night, 21-15, 21-19, for its back-to-back women’s division title romp in the UAAP Season 80 beach volleyball tournament at Sands SM By The Bay.
The Tigresses, still the most successful squad in the sport with five crowns, had to play catch up in the second set, and were able to secure the win when the Lady Tamaraws crumbled under intense pressure.
Bernadeth Pons’ outside spike turned out to be the championship point, as Cherry Rondina and Caitlyn Viray celebrated UST’s another reign in the sand court.
Rondina, who also had success in club leagues, won her third MVP award – helping her school win the third crown in the last four seasons.
The Tigresses completed a perfect 9-0 season, including a two-game finals sweep.
In Game 1, UST also pounced on FEU’s late errors in the extended second set to carve out a 21-16, 22-20 win.
Consecutive attack faults by Pons and Kyla Atienza allowed the Tigresses to sneak the opener.
