UE’s Suerte-Diakhite combo shock Adamson in second-round opener
UE continues their hot streak!
The Red Warriors opened the second round of the eliminations with a shocking win over Adamson Soaring Falcons, 80-74, in the UAAP Season 82 men’s basketball tournament at the Mall of Asia Arena on Saturday October 5.
Adamson started the matchup with a 14-4 momentum in the opening salvo over UE, and it was the former who owned the first half despite a nip-and-tuck ballgame.
The Recto-based troops flipped the switch in the second half by unleashing a 17-6 run from third to fourth quarters, which became a 65-56 lead.
Val Chauca’s jumper and Jerrick Ahanmisi’s back-to-back three-pointer pulled Adamson to within a single point, 68-69, to give UE a good scare with six minutes remaining.
This time, it was the one-two punch Alex Diakhite and Rey Suerte who made sure that UE will escape with its second straight victory.
The Senegalese tower was a huge force for the UE with 29 points, 13 rebounds, three assists, and two blocks.
“We got lucky today. We got the breaks and the players refused to lose,” UE active consultant Lawrence Chongson said.
Meanwhile, the one-and-done Suerte registered 26 points, seven boards, and three assists.
After a 1-5 start, the Red Warriors registered their first back-to-back wins to open the second round.
Meanwhile, Adamson suffered its two-game losing skid despite a 16-point and 17-rebound double-double from Lenda Douanga.
