UP fends off UE for third straight win
UP breaks away with a close win again!
The Fighting Maroons overcame Alex Diakhite’s dominance for the UE Red Warriors, 62-56, in the UAAP Season 82 men’s basketball tournament at the Ynares Sports Center, on Saturday September 21.
Javi Gomez De Liaño and Bright Akhuetie were was blazing hot in the first half, as they scored 10 apiece to lead UP into a 39-27 advantage.
In the second half, Diakhite picked up the pace for UE and forced the matchup into a nip-and-tuck matchup, on top of Harvey Pagsanjan’s lay-up with 1:58 left in the payoff period to cut the lead by just one, 56-57.
Kobe Paras would kick out to an open Jaydee Tungcab from the corner, and did not hesitate to bury the triple.
UP would then put on the finishing touches by splitting their charity stripes, as not only did they claimed their third straight victory, but they also limited the league’s leading scorer Rey Suerte to just four points.
“Our intention was really to limit his output,” said UP head coach Bo Perasol.
He then continued, “In the end, it was Jaydee that saved us with his three in the corner and his game-long brilliance in defending Rey Suerte helped us a lot.”
UP remains at the second spot with a 4-1 record.
Bright Akhuetie filled out five boards, three assists, three steals, and a block for UP. Javi Gomez De Liaño registered 15 points while Kobe Paras posted a double-double of 12 points and 10 rebounds.
Alex Diakhite powered UE with 21 points, 17 rebounds, and five assists, but that wasn’t enough to fill in Suerte’s lack of production, as they slid to just 1-4.
