UST fends off La Salle for first win in UAAP Season 89

University of Santo Tomas survived a late rally by De La Salle University to secure an 80-75 victory in the UAAP Season 89 men’s basketball tournament on Wednesday.

The Growling Tigers appeared in control after taking a 72-63 lead with more than five minutes remaining, but the Green Archers threatened to turn the game around behind crucial free throws from Luis Pablo and Jacob Cortez.

The pair helped cut the deficit to two points at 70-72 before UST answered with a layup from Mark Llemit to restore a 74-70 cushion.

DLSU responded with a three-pointer from Jan Macalalag, but UST regained momentum as Collins Akowe and Amiel Acido converted consecutive baskets to put the Tigers ahead, 78-73.

A goaltending call allowed the Green Archers to move within three, 75-78. Acido, however, calmly sank two free throws in the closing seconds to give UST a five-point lead and secure the victory.

Acido paced the Growling Tigers with 19 points, while Akowe posted 18 points and 10 rebounds. Landyn Jumawan added 10 points.

Vhoris Marasigan led DLSU with 16 points. Cortez and Earl Abadam contributed 13 points apiece, while Macalalag and Pablo finished with 10 each.

Both teams now carry identical 1-1 records in the tournament. (Adrian Co)
