The University of Santo Tomas Golden Tigresses and the College of St. Benilde Lady Blazers emerged triumphant against their respective opponents, concluding the Shakey’s Super League National Invitationals elimination round on Tuesday night at the Filoil EcoOil Centre in San Juan City.
The Golden Tigresses secured their second victory in Pool B after scoring a lopsided 25-10, 25-10, 25-8 victory over De La Salle University-Dasmarinas, which bowed out of quarterfinal contention after dropping to 0-2.
Xyza Gula top-scored for the Golden Tigresses with 14 points; Maribeth Hilongo added 13 markers; and Karylle Ann Caasi was named the Player of the Game with 13 excellent sets.
“Gusto ko lang po na maayos ‘yung performance namin. Kulang pa po kami sa chemistry, but we’re getting there,” said Caasi, who was on the reserve list of the UST during their straight set win over the University of San Jose-Recoletos last Sunday.
Reigning NCAA women’s volleyball champions, the Lady Blazers, on the other hand, also swept their two games in Pool D following a 25-11, 25-13, and 25-10 rout of the Enderun College Lady Titans.
Wielyn Estoque and Jade Gentapa joined forces for the Lady Blazers with 11 and 10 points, respectively, in the match that lasted only 63 minutes.
“Nag-focus lang po kami sa game plan at nag-enjoy lang po kami. Stick lang po ulit kami sa plan at mag-enjoy sa quarterfinals,” said Estoque.
The knockout quarterfinal round is scheduled for Wednesday, August 2, at the same venue.
