An official from the University of Santo Tomas expressed optimism, stating that with the backing of the San Miguel Corporation, the Growling Tigers have the potential to secure a spot in the Final Four of UAAP Season 86, which is scheduled for later this year.
Fr. Rodel Cansancio, OP, from UST’s IPEA, believes that the support from the Ramon Ang-owned company, combined with the coaching expertise of Alfredo “Pido” Jarencio, will be instrumental in guiding the Growling Tigers to a top-four finish.
“Hindi naman siguro agad champion nuh, but this season, nakikita ko ang UST na makaka-final four,” Cansancio said in an interview with CNN Philippines’ Sports Desk on Monday night.
Under the guidance of UST legend Bal David, the Growling Tigers experienced a disappointing eighth-place finish with a 1-13 win-loss record during the previous UAAP season.
The Espana-based dribblers last claimed the UAAP crown in 2006, coinciding with Jarencio’s inaugural year as the head coach of the Growling Tigers.
According to Cansancio, there is no company better suited than SMC to assist in the revitalization of the Growling Tigers’ basketball program.
“When I assumed the office as IPEA head, sila talaga ang target ko to help our basketball program,” Cansancio said. “I think it’s more than the financial; ‘yung moral support ni coach Al (Alfrancis Chua), tsaka ‘yung guidance niya.”
