UST went full steam in crunch time.

The Growling Tigers secured an 84-78 clutch victory against the UP Fighting Maroons in the UAAP Season 82 men’s basketball tournament at the Mall of Asia Arena on Wednesday October 16.

With that season sweep against UP, UST now breaks away in a three-way logjam with FEU and La Salle to claim the solo third spot.

Several lead changes were orchestrated by both teams in the last three minutes of the duel, but Juan Gomez De Liaño’s floater and Kobe Paras’ corner three gave UP a 78-74 separation with 1:40 mark.

However, UST answered back with five unanswered points which was capped by Brent Paraiso’s triple with 50 seconds left.

Renzo Subido capitalized on Juan Gomez De Liaño’s bad pass and quickly turned it into a step-back three pointer to give UST an 82-78 advantage with 28

From then on, UST made timely stop from the defensive side and officially sealed the deal with split charities from Soulemane Chabi Yo and Paraiso, 84-78.

“It was a good game and it was a good win because it came in a close game. Being a young team that makes the right decisions down the stretch, that was big for us,” said UST head coach Aldin Ayo.

For UST, Sherwin Concepcion topped his career-high with 16 points on 5-of-10 shooting from beyond the arc while Chabi Yo bulked in 14 markers and 10 rebounds.

Renzo Subido torched 13 points on 3-of-6 shooting from the rainbow area while CJ Cansino fired all 12 points in three-point territory.

The Growling Tigers started the 1st half with 12-of-20 shooting from the deep, including seven three-pointers in the opening salvo.

Meanwhile, UP dropped their standing to 6-4 despite the return of head coach Bo Perasol from a two-game suspension.

Kobe Paras, who came back after a scary bump on his shoulder during the second quarter, delivered for UP with 18 points while Ricci Rivero listed a season-high 12 points.
