UST Tigers shock UP
The UST Growling Tigers whipped UP Fighting Maroons, 86-72, in the UAAP Season 81 men’s basketball tournament at the Mall of Asia Arena on Wednesday, October 10.
The España-based squad outworked UP from start to finish, even leading by as much as 30 in the third period, 76-46.
UP tried to pull off a 23-6 late rally to cut the lead by as much as 14, 69-83, but Marvin Lee already secured the win for UST by draining a three-pointer with 1:38 remaining.
UST scored their first back-to-back wins this season.
“Everybody came out to play today. Almost all of my players, they played well,” said UST head coach Aldin Ayo.
“They executed the game plan and they were more relaxed and just playing basketball. They’re having fun and they played as a team,” he added.
CJ Cansino flirted with a triple-double, tallying 16 points, 10 rebounds and seven assists. Henri Subido scored 13 points followed by Kenneth Zamora’s 12 markers, all from the three-point line.
For UP, Bright Akhuetie registered a double-double of 18 points and 11 rebounds, while Javi Gomez De Liaño had 12.
With that win, UST forced a tie with UP to close out the first round, ending with an identical 3-4 standings.
