UST Growling Tigers forward Koji Buenaflor has denied claims circulating online that he was related to late Ateneo de Manila University player Rene Baterbonia.
Buenaflor issued a statement clarifying that he and Baterbonia were “not related by blood or by family,” saying he wanted to prevent further misunderstanding about their supposed connection.
“I would like to respectfully clarify that Rene (Baterbonia) and I were not related by blood or by family. I am making this clarification to prevent any misunderstanding or confusion regarding our connection,” Buenaflor said.
The clarification came after online speculation following UST’s semifinal victory over Ateneo in the PinoyLiga – The Big Dance. Buenaflor contributed seven points and six rebounds in the game.
Despite having no family connection with Baterbonia, Buenaflor expressed his sympathy to those who knew and loved the former Blue Eagle.
“Regardless of our lack of family relation, I extend my deepest sympathies to everyone who knew and loved Rene during this difficult time,” he said.
Baterbonia, 18, and fellow Ateneo student-athlete Divine Adili died after drowning during a training activity at a beach resort in Dipaculao, Aurora on June 8.
