Valdez becomes first Pinay volleybelle to play pro overseas
Philippine volleyball superstar Alyssa Valdez’s dream to play abroad as a professional player is now a reality.
In a statement, Valdez announced that she will fly to Thailand on January 15 to begin her journey as the first Filipina to play for an international club team.
The former Ateneo Queen Eagle was recruited by Thai squad 3BB Nokornnont to play as an import for the second leg of the Thai League. In addition, she will also join the team in the Thai Denmark Super League in March.
Valdez will reunite with Som Kuthaisong and Nic Jaisaen, her teammates from Bureau of Customs (BOC) in the Shakey’s V-League Reinforced Conference.
“I thank 3BB Nakornnont for giving me the opportunity to join them next year. We are still threshing out details as of now, but I will be flying to Thailand on January 15 to begin preparing for a tournament starting January 29,” Valdez said
The three-time UAAP MVP donned national colors during the 2015 Southeast Asian Games and Asian U-23 Women’s Volleyball Championship.
For Valdez, her decision to play overseas was just a stepping stone for bigger opportunities for Filipino spikers.
“I am very excited about this and hope that this open doors for more Filipino volleyball players to get the chance to play overseas. This is a blessing that has been very timely as we celebrate Christmas season,” she said.
In a Facebook post, Thai club team 3BB Nakornonnt also showed its anticipation for The Phenom, who piloted the Lady Eagles to twin UAAP titles in Seasons 76 and 77.
“Head coach Acting Sub. Lt. Thanakit Inleang (Coach M) believes in her attacking and defensive skills which will strengthen the team in Leg 2 of the league and the Thai-Denmark Super League,” the statement read. (Alex Cerado)
