MATTHEW Wright is back in the Philippine colors, bringing his international experience to Strong Group Athletics as the team goes after a third straight William Jones Cup championship.
Wright, a former Gilas Pilipinas mainstay who also played in the PBA before continuing his professional career abroad, is relishing another opportunity to represent the country on the international stage.
Now, he is set to wear the Philippine jersey once again as part of Strong Group’s title bid in Taiwan.
For Wright, the chance to represent the Philippines remains deeply meaningful.
“I mean, that’s the highlight of my career. It’s always playing for the Philippines,” Wright said.
“Anytime you wear the flag on your chest, it’s a big deal. I’m very grateful, I’m very proud. And playing for the entire country, it’s a feeling that you can’t really describe.”
But the veteran guard knows Strong Group has plenty of work to do after having limited time to prepare for the tournament.
“We have a limited amount of practice time, so that’s to our disadvantage, but we have a very talented group,” Wright said.
“We have great imports and good coaching staff, so we just have to execute the game plan. Try to gel as fast as possible, find that team chemistry, and I think we’ll be alright.”
One of the biggest additions to the roster is former NBA center Boban Marjanovic, who has already impressed Wright after just three practices together.
“I’ve only practiced with him three times, but he’s made a huge impact on the team,” Wright said.
Wright was particularly impressed by Marjanovic’s personality and his influence on the locker room.
“He’s probably one of the most humble and down-to-earth teammates I’ve ever had so far.”
“Bringing the team together, helping with the chemistry, and he’s going to be a huge help for us,” he added.
After making his name in the PBA and representing Gilas Pilipinas, Wright eventually took his career overseas. Now, he gets another chance to compete under the
Philippine flag this time with Strong Group and with a historic three-peat on the line.
With limited preparation and a tougher field awaiting them, Wright believes Strong Group’s talent and coaching can give them a chance to defend the Jones Cup crown. (Jesus Nathaniel Valdez)
