PHILIPPINE volleyball stalwart Abigail “Aby” Maraño has officially called time on her illustrious playing career, ending a 22-year journey marked by championships, national team duty, and leadership on and off the court.
The 33-year-old former national team skipper announced her retirement on Wednesday night following her final stint with the Chameleons in the Premier Volleyball League (PVL) On Tour Showdown.
Maraño leaves behind a decorated career that began at De La Salle University, where she became a key figure in the Lady Spikers’ successful UAAP campaigns.
The veteran middle blocker helped La Salle secure UAAP women’s volleyball championships in Seasons 73 and 75, establishing herself as one of the league’s standout players.
She also went on to represent the Philippines in international competitions, eventually becoming one of the national women’s team’s most recognizable leaders.
Maraño later suited up for prominent professional clubs, including the F2 Logistics Cargo Movers and Cignal HD Spikers, before joining Nxled.
Throughout her career, she earned a reputation for her aggressive blocking, competitive spirit, and vocal leadership—qualities that made her a fan favorite in Philippine volleyball.
After more than two decades of competition, the former national team captain now looks forward to a new chapter beyond the playing court, leaving behind a legacy built on championships, service to the national team, and dedication to Philippine volleyball. (Adrian Co)
