Wawrinka barges into Aussie second round

2014 champion Stan Wawrinka beat Ricardas Bernakis, 6-3, 6-4, 2-6, 7-6 (2) in the first round of the Australian Open.

The three-time Grand Slam winner Wawrinka fell early, 0-3 in the fourth set, but managed to tie the set at 6-games apiece. Wawrinka used his championship experience to beat Bernakis, 7-6 (2).

Wawrinka played his first professional match since losing to Daniil Medvedev in Wimbledon last year due to a knee injury.

He soon underwent a surgery and ended his 2017 early. He is also playing without a coach, after he and long-time coach Magnus Norman parted ways in October.
