Wright, Phoenix stop NorthPort’s blitzing run
Phoenix Pulse gave NorthPort a reality check after it ends the Batang Pier’s 4-game winning run with a 97-87 drubbing on Wednesday in the PBA Commissioner’s Cup at the Smart-Araneta Coliseum.
Matthew Wright rose exploded for 28 points as the Fuel Masters improved to 3-4 (win-loss) while relegating the Batang Pier fell to 7-2.
Richard Howell added 18 points and 15 rebounds while RJ Jazul chipped in 17 points for the Fuel Masters, who is still without the suspended Calvin Abueva.
Phoenix had to avert a 15-point meltdown as NorthPort fought back and knocked within just three, 87-90 , after a Kevin Ferrer trey with 1:14 left in the game.
However, Wright and RJ Jazul conspired late in the game to save the Fuel Masters.
Mo Tautuaa led NorthPort with 19 points and 6 rebounds while Ferrer added 16 points, 6 rebounds, and 6 assists in the Batang Pier’s first loss in the post-Stanley Pringle era.
NorthPort is now at second place of the standings behind TNT’s league-best 7-1 record.
