Wright’s dagger 3 lifts Phoenix over San Miguel to seal top seed
Matthew Wright buried a late three-pointer to help Phoenix frustrate San Miguel, 96-93, and seal the top seed in the PBA Philippine Cup on Saturday in Panabo City, Davao Del Norte.
Wright, who finished with 25 big points, knocked down one of his three triples with 1:15 left in the fourth that broke a 90-90 deadlock.
Jason Perkins made it a five-point game with a jumper.
Terronce Romeo could have tied the game but failed to do so after missing a tough fadeaway triple in the final possession of the match.
With the win, Phoenix Pulse finally sealed the number one spot in the quarterfinals, the franchise’s best finish in the elimination round in history, with a 9-2 card. The Fuel Masters also secured a twice-to-beat advantage in the quarterfinals.
Five-time league MVP June Mar Fajardo led the Beermen with 29 points and 12 rebounds. Alex Cabagnot had 17 points and 5 boards, while Romeo chimed in 15 markers.
San Miguel is now at 6-4 and is now officially out of the race for the last spot for a twice-to-beat edge in the playoffs.
