NLEX Road Warriors assistant coach Bethune “Siot” Tanquingcen believes it is premature to label the PBA Season 50 Rookie Draft as “shallow,” stressing that the true value of any draft class can only be determined once players prove themselves on the court.
“Well, I think, initially when you look at it, yes,” Tanquingcen told Abante Sports Now when asked about perceptions of a weaker draft pool. “Pero I think you can probably judge it after several years kung nakalaro na sila.”
He acknowledged that while this year’s draft may lack big-name prospects, Philippine basketball continues to produce plenty of talent.
“Ang daming magagaling na players sa Pilipinas,” he said. “I think it is hard to find the right fit kasi all of them are good. Getting them and trying to mix them with what you want to try to accomplish, ‘yun ang biggest challenge eh.”
The PBA Season 50 Rookie Draft, set this afternoon at the SM Mall of Asia Music Hall in Pasay City, features a mix of local and overseas-based prospects as teams look to strengthen their lineups for the league’s milestone season.
