KLAY Thompson’s official introduction as the newest member of the Miami Heat began with an unexpected delay after the veteran sharpshooter got stuck in Miami traffic on his way to the Kaseya Center.
Despite arriving fashionably late, Thompson was all smiles as he was officially welcomed following his move to Miami after reaching a contract buyout with the Dallas Mavericks.
The four-time NBA champion said the Heat’s demanding culture and championship aspirations made the decision to join the franchise an easy one.
“I know it’s a demanding atmosphere and it’s one that’s really competitive. That’s what attracted me to being here, so it was an easy choice for me,” Thompson said.
The 36-year-old joins a Miami roster led by Giannis Antetokounmpo and Bam Adebayo, where he is expected to provide elite perimeter shooting and veteran leadership.
Thompson, who ranks fourth in NBA history with 2,899 made three-pointers, believes the Heat offers him the perfect opportunity to chase another championship while embracing a more defined role.
“The opportunity to win again at a very high level was so attractive to me,” he said. “I get to play a specific role, and hopefully my voice will go a long way with this team by leading through example.”
Now entering his 14th NBA season, Thompson said he remains motivated to prove he can still make a significant impact.
“I still feel like I have a lot to prove,” he said. “This is kind of a redemption season for me to show I can still make an impact on winning.” (Adrian Co)
