FILIPINA tennis star Alexandra Eala could face sanctions from the WTA after opting to represent the Philippines at the 2026 Asian Games in Nagoya, Japan instead of playing in the China Open.
According to reports, Eala’s decision could result in a fine or a “zero-pointer” penalty, which would prevent her from earning ranking points from the mandatory WTA 1000 tournament.
The China Open in Beijing is scheduled around the same period as the tennis competition of the Asian Games, creating a conflict for Eala, who has chosen national-team duty.
A “zero-pointer” would potentially affect Eala’s ranking, although the report noted that she could seek an exemption because of her commitment to the Philippine national team.
The decision comes at a crucial stage of Eala’s career.
Following the US Open, she is scheduled to compete at the Singapore Open before traveling to Nagoya for the Asian Games.
Eala’s choice highlights the challenge faced by top players when international tour commitments overlap with major multi-sport events.
